In March 1988, the North Carolina Association for Middle Level Education awarded its first Distinguished Service Award to Dr. C. Kenneth McEwin, Professor of Education, Appalachian State University. To further recognize the significant contribution of this individual, the award was renamed the C. Kenneth McEwin Distinguished Service Award. This award may be presented to any individual, school, or organization. Nominations received in previous years will remain in consideration. The award will be presented to an individual or to a school or organization that has had a significant long-term impact on the advancement of middle-level education in North Carolina. The contribution could be in service, leadership, and/or research.
Who can nominate? Though nominations will typically come from the Association membership, any individual may nominate someone for this award.
What are the application requirements? The application consists of the: (1) nomination data form highlighting achievements in the areas of academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structure/processes, and (2) a letter of recommendation from the nominee’s current supervisor. This information must be submitted electronically no later than Monday, December 3rd, 2018.
Who will decide the recipient of this award?: The presentation of this award is at the discretion of the NCMLE Board of Directors. The award will be presented at the NCMLE Annual Conference. The winner will not be notified of his or her nomination or selection; however, the selection committee will inform the winner’s family so they may make arrangements to attend the awards ceremony at the conference. What are the criteria? The award should be presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding performance in middle-level education. In the accomplishments section of the nomination form, the nominator should list evidence that supports the nominee’s achievement in the following School To Watch criteria:
- Academic excellence– Excellence has been achieved and evidence shows high academic standards are expected and met.
- Developmental responsiveness– Opportunities have been created and evidence shows a rich variety of personalized learning.
- Social equity– High-quality opportunities are offered to all members of the school community and evidence shows varied approaches to meet the needs of diverse cultures.
- Organizational structures and processes– Norms, structures, and organizational arrangements are set up to support and sustain a trajectory toward excellence and evidence shows communication, community involvement, partnerships or other areas of involvement within the educational setting and beyond.
